Frequently Found Ants

Tetramorium immigrans (Pavement Ant)

 

  • Most common ant in Ohio
     
  • Small, dark brown to black
     
  • Found under sidewalks, driveways, foundations
     
  • Often enter homes for food

Tapinoma sessile (Odorous House Ant)

 

  • Small, dark brown/black
     
  • Smells like rotten coconut when crushed
     
  • Common indoors, especially kitchens
     
  • Very widespread in Ohio

Camponotus spp. (Carpenter Ant)

 

  • Large black or black-and-red ants
     
  • Found in wood, trees, decks, and homes
     
  • Very common statewide (often mistaken for termites)

Formica spp. (Field Ant)

 

  • Medium to large, reddish or dark ants
     
  • Common in lawns, fields, and parks
     
  • Build soil mounds outdoors

Monomorium minimum (Little Black Ant)

 

  • Tiny, shiny black ants
     
  • Common indoors and outdoors
     
  • Often trail along baseboards and counters
     

Solenopsis molesta (Thief Ant)

 

  • Very tiny, yellowish ants
     
  • Often found near kitchens and pantries
     
  • Frequently confused with pharaoh ants

  • Found in yards, garages, and basements
     
  • Very common, especially in fall

Parasteatoda tepidariorum (Common House Spider)

  • Small brown cobweb spider
     
  • Found in corners, basements, garages
     
  • One of the most common indoor spiders

Pholcus phalangioides (Cellar Spider)

  • Long thin legs (“daddy longlegs spider”)
     
  • Found in basements, crawl spaces, ceilings
     
  • Extremely common indoors

  • Builds big webs in gardens and fields
     
  • Very common in summer

  • Similar to yellow garden spider but slimmer

Blatta orientalis (Oriental Cockroach)

 

  • Dark brown to black, shiny
     
  • Prefers damp areas like basements and drains

Supella longipalpa (Brown-Banded Cockroach)

 

  • Small, tan with lighter bands
     
  • Found in warm, dry areas of homes

Parcoblatta spp. (Wood Cockroaches)

 

  • Outdoor species, brown
     
  • Often wander indoors accidentally; do not infest

Peromyscus leucopus (White-Footed Mouse)

 

  • Very common outdoors; often enters cabins and sheds
     
  • Found in wooded areas and rural properties
     

Peromyscus maniculatus (Deer Mouse)

 

  • Common in rural Ohio
     
  • Found in barns, garages, sheds, and fields
     

Tamias striatus (Eastern Chipmunk)

 

  • Very common statewide
     
  • Found around homes, gardens, and wooded edges

Sciurus carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel)

 

  • Extremely common
     
  • Found in attics, trees, parks, and neighborhoods
